In the magical practitioner’s mind, the symbol of the Apple would equate with the goddess Venus/Aphrodite (remember the ‘Judgement of Paris’?), whose colours are Pink or Green. Also the planet Venus corresponds with Friday; the zodiacal signs of Taurus and Libra; the minerals Copper/Bronze and gemstones Jade/Lapis Lazuli. Flora and fauna are represented by Apple/Sycamore, Rose/Carnation and the Dove. A magical working carried out under the auspices of Venus would relate to harmony, growth and development as well as love and marriage. It also extends to the affections, dance and music, fashion, materialism, personal finances and pleasure.

Therefore the spell for any of these would need to utilise as many of the listed correspondences as possible … plus a few personal additions of our own. And all this from a humble apple!

This is, of course, a very elementary glimpse into the relativity of correspondences in magical practice. Even the most basic candle spell with its different coloured candles and perfumed anointing oil, is drawing on the symbolism of correspondence, no matter how nicely its been tarted up in the text! The more we understand about magical correspondences, the less we will need to rely on superfluous ‘magical’ equipment.
